Establishing a CMIS connection between IBM FileNet P8 and Microsoft SharePoint 2013

by Tilo Sönnichsen, RKO ECM Technical Specialist

After a series of requests from our team, I recently looked at establishing a Content Management Interoperability Service (CMIS) connection between IBM FileNet P8 and Microsoft SharePoint 2013. It worked with surprisingly little effort!

Technology:

IBM FileNet P8 v 5.1

IBM Content Navigator (ICN) client v2.0.1

Microsoft SharePoint 2013 (CMIS repository/library)

Time Investment:

2 hours

The Process:

Within SharePoint 2013 I set-up a simple site, with a simple document library and a variety of documents ranging from emails to PDFs. In addition to enabling the CMIS site features within SharePoint, I used Basic Authentication to test this first connection.

Within ICN, I configured the new repository as a CMIS repository using the associated URL’s, and voila, it was ready to go.

Within ICN, I was easily able to browse the SharePoint 2013 library, view metadata, open and view the document and see thumbnail previews.  Next I will explore further to see how well CMIS can:

– Search
– Conduct basic document functions (check-in, out, etc)
– Interact with workflow and other advanced features
– Enable the SharePoint CMIS web part to browse IBM FileNet from within SharePoint

So stay tuned! If you beat me to my next steps, please drop me a line at rko@rkosolutions.com to let me know how it goes!
